How to Care for Lilies in a Vase — Keep Them Fresh for Up to 2 Weeks

Lilies are one of the most elegant and fragrant flowers you can display at home. If yours tend to fade faster than expected, the cause is usually improper care rather than the flowers themselves. Follow the steps below consistently and your lilies can stay fresh in a vase for up to two weeks.

ðŸŒŋ Preparing the Stems and Vase

  • Trim stems at a 45-degree angle:
Cut the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle, sizing them proportionately to the height of your vase.
  • Remove leaves below the waterline:
Strip away any leaves that would sit below the water surface. Submerged leaves decompose quickly and contaminate the water.
  • Add flower food to the water:
Mix flower food into the water each time you refill or replace it to extend freshness and nourish the stems.

ðŸŒļ Caring for Lilies as They Bloom

  • Allow 2–3 days for buds to open:
If your lilies arrive as buds, they will gradually open within 2–3 days. In cooler temperatures, blooming may be delayed by an additional 1–2 days.
  • Remove all anthers as soon as the flowers open:
Once a flower opens and the stamens become visible, use tweezers or your fingers to remove all six dark brown anthers surrounding the pistil. Leaving them intact causes the flower to bloom and fade faster.

  • Remove yellowing leaves immediately:
Pull off any leaf that turns yellow right away. Yellowing leaves produce ethylene gas, which accelerates wilting across the entire arrangement.
  • Cut off flowers that have fully bloomed and begun to fade:
Any flower that has gone past peak and is visibly wilting or losing colour should be cut off. Deteriorating flowers release compounds that speed up the decline of the remaining blooms.

💧 Ongoing Water and Stem Maintenance

  • Trim stems every 2–3 days:
Re-cut the bottom of each stem slightly every 2–3 days to maintain the stems' ability to absorb water efficiently.
  • Replace water and flower food every 5–6 days:
Empty the vase, rinse it clean, then refill with fresh water and a new dose of flower food every 5–6 days.

⚠ïļ Important Warnings

  • Pollen stains fabric permanently:
Anthers left on the flower will eventually release deep yellow-red pollen. This pollen is extremely difficult to remove from clothing, linens, or upholstery — remove the anthers early before they open fully.
  • Pollen can trigger allergies:
Lily pollen is a known allergen for some people. Remove the anthers as soon as the flower opens to prevent pollen from dispersing into the air around your home.
  • Keep the vase away from fruit and food:
Fruit and certain foods release ethylene gas that shortens the life of cut flowers. Always position your vase away from the kitchen counter or fruit bowls.
